About This Newsletter

I’m Dr. Howard Luks is an orthopedic surgeon with over 30 years of practice experience, a lifelong athlete, author, and educator. I write about what most doctors don’t have time to explain: why your body works the way it does, what actually helps, and how to stay active, strong, and independent as you age.

This newsletter delivers clear, practical, evidence-based writing on longevity, midlife and master’s athlete training, metabolic health, exercise science, injury prevention, and the physiology of aging. No gimmicks. No hype. No influencer supplements. Just grounded science and guidance rooted in decades of clinical experience and a deep commitment to helping people stay capable and resilient.

Many of you have told me these posts are motivating. That’s the goal. I’m trying to scale the message I deliver to a few patients in my office each day to the thousands of you reading here.

What You’ll Find Here

I publish two to three long-form articles a week. Current and recent series include:

A year-long Brain Health series examining what the research actually says about protecting your brain through midlife and beyond. The Modules for developing a framework for training series are a well-structured, paid-subscriber curriculum covering the biology of aging well, including why you are not fragile, why impact matters, tendon and tissue capacity, and strength for longevity.

To date, the most popular post by far has been how and why I train the way I do at 62. The biology of aging is real. Combine that with the physiological changes that occur in later life, and our training has to adapt.

A complete Knee Osteoarthritis book published as a series right here on Substack, drawing on 30 years as a surgeon and my own experience as a patient with knee OA. Deep coverage of GLP-1 therapies and their implications far beyond weight loss. And a series on tendon health, shoulder pain, menopause, training, and labs that lie to us.

Every Saturday, I publish a Saturday Action Plan with training guidance, exercise videos filmed with my strength coach, and programming that follows my Enough/Better/Optimal framework, so you can find the level that fits your life.

I’ve also published downloadable guides for paid subscribers on topics including heart rate training and aerobic base building, bone density and the LIFTMOR protocol, metabolic health, perimenopausal training, and tennis elbow.

My books include Longevity Simplified and Knee Osteoarthritis: What 30 Years as a Surgeon and a Patient Have Taught Me.

Why I Write This

The healthcare system is reactive. We wait for the disease and then try to manage it. I believe there’s a better path, one rooted in education, prevention, and strategic adaptation as we age.

Whether you’re a master athlete, a weekend warrior, someone in midlife trying to regain momentum, or a clinician trying to guide patients toward better outcomes, this newsletter is for you.

The science of living longer and healthier is not as complicated as you’ve been led to believe.

Come Learn, Train, and Age Smarter

I don’t believe decline is destiny. I believe in adaptation, agency, and the long game. If you do too, subscribe and join the conversation.

Movement doesn’t always need a purpose, but it always has an effect.
